Know Parts Of A Necklace From A Jeweler

Necklaces are perhaps the second most loved jewelry item after engagement rings. Yet, they don’t get enough attention as they should. Customers know a lot more about different kinds of necklace chains than necklaces itself. And it pains me as a jeweler since knowing the anatomy of a necklace will help people make wiser decisions.

So in this article, I am going to explain different parts of the necklace and throw light on each one of them in painstaking detail with the hope that you (as a reader and customer) would be much clearer when you go out shopping next time.

Parts of A Necklace Explained

Any necklace be it with temple jewelry or a plain pendant set can be broken down into 3 essential components (parts).

  1. Pendant/Embellishment
  2. Chain/Cord
  3. Clasp/Fastener

Let’s take a look at each one of them in detail.

Pendant/Embellishment

Pendant/Embellishment

Anything that is attached to the chain/cord is called a pendant or embellishment. For example in the above image, an intricate design is made from 18k white gold with real diamonds.

Pendants (or embellishments) are the first thing that gets noticed in any necklace and they come in all designs and forms. Few of the most popular ones are –

Pendants: Many people mistake pendants to be necklaces. However, these two are very different things. A pendant is an ornament. It annexes to and hangs from the necklace cord or chain. It is not the necklace itself. You can find them in various styles, sizes, and designs. They typically feature filigree, symbols, and gemstones, among other things. Some pendants are called charms and are worn as bracelets.

Lockets: It is a type of pendant with a small compartment or compartments to accommodate the keepsake, such as a lock of hair or a photograph. These may be made from different materials but are typically made from precious metals like silver or gold. They are excellent gifts for sentimental occasions, like holidays, anniversaries, or birthdays.

Charms are small decorative pendants usually employed as a symbol of luck or to commemorate a special memory or occasion. These can be made from different materials like glass, enamel, or metal and come in various shapes and sizes. Charms are mostly annexed to necklaces or bracelets and can be collected over time to create a personalized piece of jewelry.

Intricate designs: These include complex patterns, shapes, or designs created using gemstones, glass, or metal. Typically, skilled artisans handcraft these embellishments. The intricate pendant designs can be a beautiful statement piece and add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any outfit.

These embellishments add character to the necklace chains and provide a unique look.

Necklace Chains/Cord

Necklace Chains/Cord

Necklaces have either metal chains, gemstone strands or cords (also known as Balthi in India) to hold the pendant.

Metal Chains

There are a variety of necklace chains available in the market. In-fact at last count, we could remember the number to be more than 10. Some of the more prominent ones are –

1. Rope Chain

Curb chains are a go-to pick amongst men. Typically, they come with large and heavy links. It has a classic, straightforward design of interlocking, flat, and identical links. You can wear it by itself or team it with a pendant.

This chain features a complex pattern of interlocking rings that produce a layered and textured effect. It is one of the most elaborately designed chains with circle or oval links woven together in alternating directions. Every link in the chain goes through four other links. Byzantine Chains have a unique pattern that does not look like any other chain.

These chains can be made in any precious metals like yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, sterling silver or platinum. They can also be made in metals like copper or brass.

Besides the choice of the metal, there are various other considerations that should go into choosing the right necklace chain. Some of those are –

  1. Price: The chain’s price can vary significantly depending on the length, metal, type, and complexity of the chain. So, bear in your mind your budget when picking a chain.
  2. Necklace Length: The necklace’s length can determine how the pendant sits and looks on the neckline. Consider the style of the pendant and your personal preference when selecting the chain length.
  3. Weight of the pendant: The pendant’s weight will impact how it hangs and how much stress it puts on the chain. Select a chain that can support the pendant’s weight without breaking.
  4. Type of chain: Different chains have different characteristics that impact the necklace’s overall feel and look. For instance, the delicate pendant looks better on a fine chain, whereas the bold pendant requires a more substantial or thicker chain.

In-fact , we did an extensive article on an informational guide to choosing the best necklace chains for pendants.

Gemstones Strands

Sometimes people don’t want to get a metal chain for their necklace and instead opt for gemstone strands. The most popular gemstone used in necklaces are pearls. A pearl strand looks stunning and majestic at the same time.

Gemstones Strands

Other popular gemstones used in necklace strands are Blue Sapphire, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Citrine, Peridot, Opal, Tourmaline, Topaz, and Garnet, among others. Each has their unique symbolism and properties, which makes them ideal for various styles and occasions. Ultimately the decision to go for gemstone strands instead of metal chains depends on two factors.

  1. Price: Gemstones vary in price, depending on factors like the cut, size, rarity, quality, and type of gemstone. While in some cases, the gemstones may be more expensive than metal chains, generally speaking, the metal chains are the costlier alternative. Thus, consider your budget and assess whether the additional cost of the gemstone strand is worth it for the pendant.
  2. Suitability with pendant design: The strand or type of chain must complement the pendant’s design. A simple metal chain will work well with a minimalist pendant, whereas the gemstone strand can accentuate the look of a more colorful or ornate pendant. The texture, color, and style of the gemstone strand must complement or match the pendant’s colors and details to produce a cohesive look.

Cords

If someone is neither interested in metal chains nor gemstone strands, then the last option is a cord. The cords are made of:

  1. Silk – A classic option
  2. Polyester – A robust and a more contemporary alternative
  3. Leather – A fashionable and durable option that appeals to the masculine aesthetic
  4. Plastic-coated wires such as hemp or Tiger Tail are sturdy options, for heavier gemstones and beads.

Cords are usually a much cheaper option than gemstone strands let alone metal chains.

Usually people go for these types of cords when they don’t want to splurge too much on the chain and have bought a quite visible and expensive pendant.

Clasp/Fasteners

Clasp/Fasteners

Clasp (or fasteners) hold the two ends of the necklace chain together. Though it is very small in comparison to the chain or the pendant and doesn’t get much attention, it is a very crucial element of the necklace.

A clasp should be strong enough to carry the weight of the chain as well as the pendant (if any). Needless to say that if a wrong clasp is used, you run the risk of losing your necklace.

There are many types of clasps available in the market. Some of the most popular ones are –

  1. Lobster Clasp comes with a lobster-claw-like section and a lever that you pull down to open the claw. It attaches to the small ring on the other end of the necklace and is a popular and secure option.
  2. Spring Ring Clasp – It is a clasp with a ring that you can open and close with a small lever. Spring Ring Clasp operates with a spring mechanism. Hence, the name. Once you close it, the spring won’t open easily unless you push it down with pressure.
  3. Hook and Eye Clasp – This clasp has a hook inserted into the eye to secure the bracelet or necklace. It is an elegant and straightforward design noted in delicate jewelry pieces.
  4. Toggle Clasp has a T-shaped bar inserted into the loop to secure the bracelet or necklace. Toggle clasps are easy to use and very stylish, making them a popular choice in many jewelry pieces.
  5. Box Clasp has a small box that snaps shut to secure the bracelet or necklace. These are popular clasp options in more formal jewelry designs and are pretty secure.
  6. Magnetic Clasp: This clasp has two magnets that snap together to secure the bracelet or necklace. The magnetic clasps are easy to use and can be an excellent choice for those with limited dexterity. However, they are not as secure as other types of clasps.

Conclusion

Thus, when buying a necklace, you must know about the different parts that make up the piece. Each component has a crucial role in the necklace’s overall look and feel. Hence, it is imperative to consider them all when making a decision to buy.

From the cord (or chain) to the pendant to different types of clasps, every part is important in its own way. Hence, take a holistic approach when choosing a necklace and consider all the parts together to ensure the final piece matches with your personal style, budget, and preference.
